Thiruvananthapuram is a city steeped in history and exudes a splendor that arises from its regal history. Heritage, traditions, culture and royalty go hand in hand in this city that is known for its temples, palaces, museums, galleries and festivals. Trivandrum is blessed with a rich colonial heritage, culinary delights, luminous regal past, cultural richness, and of course, the awe-inspiring beaches and hills  Trivandrum is the anglicized name of Thiruvanthapuram. However after 1991,the city was renamed Thiruvananthapuram. This city has a tradition dating back to 1000 B.C . The city got its name from the idol residing in Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple-Ananta. The term ‘Thiruvananthapuram’ is derived from the Malayalam language thiru- anantha-puram which means ‘City of Lord Ananta.’ Ananta is the serpent Shesha on whom Lord Padmanabha (another form of Lord Vishnu) reclines.
